Why does my Maltipoo lick so much?

By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 13 July 2026

Why does my Maltipoo lick so much?

Usually affection and taste: you are salty, and licking you is this breed's love language plus a proven way to get attention. Watch the target though; a dog licking YOU is bonding, a dog licking its own paws constantly is itching, and persistent paw-licking in our humid climate deserves a vet look.

The love-language licking

A Maltipoo licks the people it owns: hands, ankles, the odd surprise ear. It is grooming behaviour inherited from puppyhood, it releases feel-good chemistry for the dog, and with a breed this attention-driven it doubles as a reliable button for making you look down and smile.

If the excessive licking is more than you enjoy, do not scold; just make it unprofitable. Stand up, disengage for a few seconds, return when the tongue rests. Attention-seeking behaviours fade when the attention stops arriving.

The self-licking that means something

Owners who search why is my dog licking paws are usually onto something: constant paw-licking is the one to watch. In Singapore's humidity, moisture trapped between toes invites yeast and irritation, and grass or dust mite allergies show up as itchy feet before anything else. Rusty-pink saliva stains on white paw fur, the same porphyrins that cause tear stains, are the tell that it has been going on a while.

Dry paws properly after rain walks and baths, check between pads weekly, and if the licking is frequent enough that you notice it, book the vet; itch treated early is cheap, and licked-raw skin is not.

Boredom, anxiety and the licking loop

A clever, under-occupied dog self-soothes, and licking (paws, blankets, sofa corners) is a common loop. If the licking spikes when the flat empties or during boring afternoons, treat the cause: more mental play, alone-time conditioning, and a chew or puzzle feeder that occupies the mouth legally.

Sudden obsessive licking of one spot, or of the air, can signal pain or nausea and skips the behaviour queue entirely; that is a vet call.

Reading the lick

  • Licking you: affection + attention button
  • Licking paws constantly: itch, see the vet
  • Pink-stained paw fur: it has been a while
  • Boredom licking: add mental work
  • Sudden obsessive licking: vet, promptly

Frequently asked questions

Is letting my Maltipoo lick my face safe?

Mostly a hygiene judgement call; avoid broken skin and wash after. For babies and immunocompromised family, keep tongues off faces.

Why does my Maltipoo lick the sofa?

Usually taste plus habit plus a quiet afternoon. Rotate chews and add a puzzle feeder; if it turns obsessive, treat it like paw-licking and investigate.

Do tear stains and licking connect?

Different pigments, same principle: porphyrins in saliva stain light fur the way tears do. Heavy paw staining means the licking has been chronic.

Can I train the licking away completely?

You can make it rare by making it unprofitable, and most owners keep a little; it is half the point of a velcro dog.

When is paw-licking a vet problem?

When it is constant, leaves the fur rusty-pink, or licks the skin raw. In Singapore’s humidity, yeast and allergies show up as itchy feet first, and itch treated early is cheap while licked-raw skin is not.

Why does my Maltipoo lick more in hot weather?

Humidity traps moisture between the toes and feeds yeast and irritation, so paw-licking often rises in the wet months. Dry the feet properly after rain walks and check between the pads weekly.
