Preparing your Maltipoo for its first grooming
By Nelson and Kim, AVS licensed pet shop owners · Updated 13 July 2026
When can a Maltipoo puppy have its first groom?
After the vaccination course allows outings, typically from around four months; before that, rehearse at home. Book a short intro session rather than a full style, brief the groomer to prioritise calm over perfect, and the first visit decides how the next fifteen years of salon trips go.

Why the first visit matters so much
Owner forums are full of the same horror story: a first groom booked as a full three-hour style, a puppy discovering clippers, dryers and strangers simultaneously, and a groomer calling mid-session because the dog is terrified. That fear, installed once, takes months to undo.
Run it the other way and grooming becomes routine maintenance for life: short first visit, half-finished haircut, happy puppy, generous tip. Calm beats perfect on visit one, every time.
The home rehearsal, weeks before
Everything a salon does can be rehearsed in miniature: touch paws and ears daily and reward, brush for sixty seconds and stop while it is still pleasant, run a beard trimmer near (not on) the puppy so motor noise becomes furniture, introduce the dryer on cool from across the room.
The grooming set in the starter kit covers the tools. Ten minutes a day for two weeks buys a puppy that thinks handling is normal, which is most of what a groomer needs from you.
Booking and briefing the groomer
Book off-peak so the salon is quiet, name it as a first groom when booking, and ask for a puppy intro package if offered: bath, dry, face and feet tidy, no full clip. Brief in writing: eye corners fully clear, calm over completion, call me rather than push through fear.
Watch how the salon reacts to that brief; the good ones brighten. And stay away during the session; hovering owners make anxious dogs. Collect a slightly scruffy, entirely cheerful puppy and you have won the day.
First-groom brief
- Timing: post-vaccinations, ~4 months
- Two weeks of daily home rehearsal first
- Short intro session, not a full style
- Brief: eyes clear, calm over perfect
- Off-peak booking, owner stays away
Frequently asked questions
Can I fully groom my puppy at home instead?
Maintenance yes, style cuts no; a wiggling toy puppy plus scissors is how ear tips get nicked. Rehearse at home, style at the salon.
How much does a first groom cost?
Puppy intro sessions typically price at or below the basic-groom tier, $50 to $70 for a toy dog at published Singapore rates.
My puppy already fears the dryer. Now what?
Restart from across the room on cool, pair with treats, and advance a metre at a time over days. Fear undone slowly stays undone.
How often after the first groom?
Every four to six weeks, per the grooming guide; the coat and our humidity set the calendar, not the salon's marketing.
When can a Maltipoo puppy have its first grooming?
After the vaccination course allows outings, usually around four months, with weeks of gentle home rehearsal before that. Rushing a full style onto an unvaccinated, unprepared puppy is how clipper fear starts.
How do I prevent clipper fear at the first groom?
Book a short intro session, not a full clip; rehearse handling, brushing and motor noise at home first; and brief the groomer in writing to stop and call rather than push a frightened puppy through. Calm on visit one buys fifteen easy years.
